NCC helps to develop and transform Mälardalen University
Following a procurement process, NCC has been selected by Hemsö as the contractor for the development of the “S” building at Mälardalen University, which will be repurposed from its current function as a teaching facility into office space. The project is a turnkey contract in partnering form with an order value of approximately SEK 150 million.

NCC will partner with Hemsö to redevelop the “S” building in the old college that NCC once constructed back in 1994. The building comprises three floors and a basement consisting of approximately 6,000 square meters. The building will be adapted and redeveloped into modern administrative offices for Mälardalen University.
“This is an exciting, multi-faceted and innovative project that focuses on reuse and sustainability. It has been invaluable for us to have a contractor involved at such an early stage in the process. We’ve been able to focus on climate optimization already in the design phase and have identified several opportunities for reuse. Reusing parts of the existing building has been a central issue, and now it is up to us to jointly realize all of our ideas,” says Thomas Wall, Project Manager at Hemsö.
The project has high ambitions for sustainability and reuse, and a significant share of the products will be reused in the new office premises – from windows, doors and plasterboard to carpets and much of the building installations. The project aims to be one of the first projects in Sweden to be certified according to Miljöbyggnad Gold 4.0 – Refurbishment.
“During the project planning phase, we discussed many ideas on how to achieve the best results and identify the right products to reuse. Being able to refurbish, reuse or purchase reclaimed items instead of buying new will be the biggest challenge when the ambition is to reuse as much material as possible from the existing building,” says Anders Lindkvist, Production Manager at NCC Building Sweden in Västerås.
The order value is approximately SEK 150 million and will be registered in the NCC Building business area in second quarter of 2025. The project planning phase was initiated in autumn 2024. Production will commence in May 2025 and is scheduled for completion at the end of 2026.
