NCC to build a new pilot hall for RISE in Örnsköldsvik
NCC and RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) are initiating the next step in their partnership and are building the Bioeconomy Arena, a pilot hall with test bed facilities for the development of new biochemical products. The project is a turnkey contract valued at approximately SEK 150 million.

The pilot hall in the Domsjö district of Örnsköldsvik will encompass 2,600 square meters and will be constructed using a wooden frame and wooden façades, with a matching sedum roof over part of the building. The building is being constructed with the ambition of achieving Miljöbyggnad level Silver and will feature specially adapted testing areas, laboratories and associated offices with meeting spaces for research operations.
“The new pilot hall will facilitate the scaling up and commercialization of new biological products and solutions. A close partnership with industry brings together leading-edge scientific competence, ultramodern technology and entrepreneurs in order to increase the pace of the transition to a bioeconomy and a resilient society,” says Pia Sandvik, CEO of RISE.
“By collaborating with RISE right from an early design phase, we have been able to plan for an innovative and cost-efficient building with space for both test beds and meetings,” says Charlotte Thelm, Division Manager of NCC Building.
The initial groundbreaking will take place on June 15. The earthworks will begin immediately and construction will commence in autumn 2022. Occupancy is planned for the winter of 2023/2024.
The project is a turnkey contract, and the order value is approximately SEK 150 million,
which will be registered among orders during the second quarter of 2022 in the NCC Building Sweden business area.
