NCC continues development of the Eastern Link in Luleå

Collaboration between NCC and Luleå Municipality will continue with a further expansion of the Eastern Link, which will secure the water supply for a growing Luleå. NCC has now been contracted to build Luleå’s largest wastewater pumping station (P040) and provide the water supply and sewerage infrastructure for the first and second phases of the Eastern Link. The order value is approximately SEK 160 million.

To secure Luleå’s water supply and sewerage system ahead of upcoming industrial investments and a growing population, the municipality’s water and sewerage pipes are now being extended. The expansion has been named the Eastern Link (Sw. Östra länken). The project is Luleå’s largest-ever civil engineering project and commenced in 2014.

NCC has now been contracted to complete parts of two new phases and install a wastewater pumping station (P040) as part of the ‘Eastern Link continuation’ partnering project. Phase 1 and P040 will be connected to the Uddebo wastewater treatment plant in Luleå. The pipe system in Phase 2 will enable a greater population and the planned industrial development on the island of Hertsön in Luleå.

“We’ve been working closely and positively with NCC for many years and have maintained a close dialogue throughout the project. We work together to find positive solutions for the development of this important infrastructure that will meet the needs of a growing Luleå,” says Stefan Lindqvist, Project Manager for Lumire, Luleå Miljöresurs AB.

“Luleå has a key role to play in Sweden’s green transition, and we are both proud and happy that NCC can be involved and enable the major industrial investments in Luleå while also creating opportunities to double the city’s population,” says Erik Sandström, Project Manager, NCC Infrastructure.

The Eastern Link is a turnkey project in an expanded partnership with the client, Luleå Miljöresurs AB, a newly formed company in Luleå Municipality. NCC’s ‘Eastern Link continuation’ contract includes options to extend the contract with these two phases. NCC has already completed Phases 3, 4F and 4E of the ‘Eastern Link continuation’ contract, which included installation of the P014 pumping station.

The work will commence in December 2022 and is scheduled for completion in 2025. The order value for Phase 1 Part 1 (Pumping station P040) and Phase 2 Part 2 is approximately SEK 160 million, and the order will be registered in the NCC Infrastructure business area in the fourth quarter of 2022.
