NCC expands electricity supply in southern Stockholm
NCC has now commenced the refurbishment of one of Stockholm’s oldest national grid stations in Hammarby Sjöstad. The new main distribution station will have increased capacity and pave the way for the development of southern Stockholm. The project is a turnkey contract in partnering form on behalf of Ellevio.

In Hammarby Sjöstad, NCC is building a new modern main distribution station that will house a 220 kV gas-insulated switchgear. The refurbishment of this station will increase the output of Stockholm’s electricity grid, which is a prerequisite for continued electrification and expansion of the city. The new station will supply a large part of Stockholm’s southern suburbs and parts of the inner city with power.
“The station in Hammarby Sjöstad is a crucial piece of the puzzle in equipping Stockholm for the future, accelerating electrification and ensuring capacity requirements. We chose NCC because it could meet these stringent requirements and has both the capacity and the know-how to carry out complex infrastructure projects,” says Johanna Walterson, Director of Programs and Projects at Ellevio.
In a previous collaboration, NCC, Hitachi Energy and Ellevio designed, planned, and budgeted for the new station. In the phase that has now begun, the construction documentation is being designed and the station itself is being constructed. NCC has now begun the construction of the new main distribution station by replacing and moving a number of high-voltage cables. In the next step, the ground will be driven with sheet piles and piles in order to stabilize it prior to excavation of a new basement floor. The framework of the building will be raised in the summer of 2023.
“The project is very challenging, technically speaking, with advanced foundation work on the grounds of an existing electrical station that is, moreover, in operation while we are building. Through close and solid collaboration with our technological partners, Hitachi Energy and Ellevio, we are safeguarding the expansion of Stockholm’s energy supply,” says Matti Virkki, Business Manager of NCC Building Sweden.
The work on the new main distribution station in Hammarby Sjöstad began in the spring of 2022 and completion is planned for autumn 2025. The project was registered during the second quarter of 2022 in the NCC Building Sweden business area.
