NCC and LKAB sign partnering agreement for new sorting plant in Gällivare

NCC and LKAB have entered into an additional partnering agreement for a development project in the Swedish Ore Fields (Malmfälten). The agreement relates to the construction of a new sorting plant at LKAB’s facility in Vitåfors, Gällivare. In the initial phase of the project, the parties will conduct planning and engineering work.

LKAB’s sorting plant in Vitåfors has reached the end of its service life and needs to be replaced. The sorting plant is part of the process for producing iron ore through a mechanical process that separates ore from waste rock. The new plant will be built next to the existing one on a site area of approximately 24,000 square meters.

“The sorting plant has been in operation for a long time and has served us well. The current design of the plant is not adapted to today’s operations from the perspective of work environment and the technology used. We also need to handle larger volumes,” says Monika Sammelin, Area Manager, LKAB.

During the initial phase, the parties will plan the construction of the plant and the excavation of rock that will be needed to create space for the new sorting plant. The next step is to plan foundation engineering work and earth and groundworks before construction of the plant can commence. A construction contract is expected to be signed when building work is initiated.

In June 2024, NCC and LKAB also signed a partnering agreement for the project concerning construction of the planned direct reduction plant and associated infrastructure at Malmberget.

“We are now expanding our partnership with LKAB in the Swedish Ore Fields. By getting involved in the process at an early stage, we – as contractors – can contribute both resources and specialist expertise to optimize implementation of this project. We are pleased to be able to contribute to LKAB’s continued expansion,” says Helena Hed, Head of NCC Green Industry Transformation.

The agreement and work are being conducted by the NCC Green Industry Transformation business area.
