There is plenty of engineering work in an asphalt project
With an unexpected entry into the asphalt industry, I have experienced a world of variation, innovation, and responsibility. From smaller bridge projects to large highway projects, my work in the construction industry has allowed me to shape the infrastructure of the future.
When I graduated as a civil engineer from Ballerup Engineering College in 2011, I never imagined that the asphalt industry would be my path. But now, nearly 14 years later, I look back with pride. I am still just as motivated and excited about both the industry's development and the close collaboration with the many skilled colleagues who make going to work exciting every day.
My first job was at Dansk Støbeasfalt, where I worked for three years. Then I made the leap to NCC, where I have been a sales and project manager in the asphalt division since January 2016. My career at NCC began in the bridge department, where I was responsible for smaller asphalt projects. Over time, I have developed and taken on larger tasks and more responsibility. Today, I work on some of our largest asphalt projects in Zealand, including several highway projects for the Danish Road Directorate. These require not only technical insight but also a keen ability to plan and manage subcontractors.
Why the asphalt industry?
One of the things I really appreciate about the asphalt industry is the variation in the work. No two days are the same. There is always a new project to tackle, new challenges to solve, and each time you can see the results of your efforts. It is satisfying to drive over Crown Princess Mary's Bridge and know that I contributed to the paving that lies there. The same goes for the Storstrøm Bridge, where we currently have a large asphalt project underway.
And it's not just me who is proud—my children also think it's me who personally laid the asphalt. They don’t yet understand how much engineering and planning goes into a project like this, but I’m glad that I can share it with them.
An industry in constant development
The asphalt industry is not static—it is constantly moving forward, and it is motivating to be a part of that journey. It is an industry where you can truly make a difference, not only by creating infrastructure but also by contributing to new solutions. I am proud to say that I am helping to build the future—in a way that considers both people and the environment.
So even though I didn’t plan to end up in the asphalt industry, I am glad that I did. It has given me the opportunity to develop, take on responsibility, and help make an impact on Denmark's infrastructure.
