Getting Started as a Production Engineer at NCC
As a newly hired production engineer at NCC, I have truly been given exciting challenges and trust. My workdays are varied, and I work in a great team that genuinely wants us all to succeed. In this blog, I write about my daily work life and the tasks I get to tackle.
First, I should probably introduce myself. My name is Brage Haugen, and I have just started in a permanent position in the NCC Industry's Stone Materials department. Here, I will work as a production engineer focusing on quarry planning, operational planning, and resource management of all the amazing stone we have access to!
My academic background is from NTNU in Trondheim, where I studied bedrock and resource geology. It is no secret that we rely on many natural resources for life and society to function. As someone who loves nature and spending time in it in various ways, I am passionate about ensuring that necessary interventions are carried out as sustainably and responsibly as possible. That is why I look forward to working on exactly this at NCC Industry!

My path into the company is a bit unusual. After finishing my studies, I started the trainee program at Norsk Bergindustri. Here, you work at three of its member companies over two years. This was a fantastic start to my career and two incredibly interesting and educational years!
NCC Arna Stone Crushing Plant
By coincidence, the last company in the trainee program was NCC Industry and their stone crushing plant in Arna, not far from where I grew up. Here, I was met by a group of engaged and knowledgeable colleagues. I was thrown straight into the action, participating in the daily operations and assisting the site manager with planning and administrative tasks. I also had the opportunity to visit other sites and work with the central staff in the organization. From top to bottom, the people here are approachable, respectful, and curious. This creates a great work environment, which is one of the main reasons I wanted to continue working here!

So what do we actually do? It is easy to think that the production of crushed stone and gravel is boring and unchallenging. Isn’t it just about blasting some rocks and throwing them into a crusher? Well, at NCC, it is far from the truth. We constantly deal with challenges such as improving operational efficiency, mass balance, modernization, and much more.
NCC dares to challenge and test new ideas. At several of our quarries, we produce machine sand—sand from crushed rock that is of such high quality and so similar to natural occurrences that it can be used for concrete. A fantastic product, in other words! We also focus on becoming the best in the industry at receiving materials from infrastructure and development projects and processing them. These types of projects and tasks are the reason why I want to work for NCC Industry. We don’t just talk about sustainability; we actually do it!

In addition to this, NCC Industry is an excellent place for a relatively young and newly graduated person to develop and build a network. The catalog of courses and workshops is extensive, so you are sure to find something useful and interesting. I have also had the chance to meet many colleagues working in completely different areas than me. I have definitely learned something from them, and I hope they have learned a little from me too!
